People with type one diabetes have been able to access continuous glucose monitoring subsidized on the NDSS (National Diabetes Services Scheme) since 1st July 2022. Technology in all forms is changing the landscape of diabetes management and the uptake of the use of this equipment no matter the type of diabetes is becoming increasingly common.
Is there a role then for this technology for people who may have concerns about their glucose levels or do not yet have a diagnosis of diabetes? The simple answer, in my opinion, is yes!

Prediabetes

Prediabetes occurs when glucose levels start to increase but are not yet elevated enough to allow health care professionals to diagnose diabetes. There are generally no symptoms. However, living with prediabetes can increase the risk of developing heart disease.

Prediabetes is often reversible with lifestyle changes.

This is where monitoring and understanding what the numbers mean is so important to health.

Why CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring)?

Using a continuous glucose monitor in prediabetes provides immediate, real-time biofeedback that may prevent progression to type 2 diabetes and promote reversal to healthy blood glucose levels.

Continuous glucose monitoring in other types of diabetes is also worthwhile. It offers real time glucose levels plus trends which allows individuals to track what influences their results.

Personalised Lifestyle Changes

  • Food modification: Understanding what foods spike glucose levels allow healthy food choices and users feel better.
  • Physical activity: Motivate individuals to move more as the impact of phyical activity on glucose levels becomes apparent.
  • Hidden sugars: Real data shows unexpected blood glucose peaks. Changes can then be made in the future to prevnet this.

Understanding of Your Body

  • Glucose variability: Graphs captures the “peaks” and “troughs” of glucose levels-this can make indivduals feel unwell and is an easy “fix” if treated appropriately.
  • Comprehensive patterns: Tracking daily data reveals how poor sleep or high stress impact insulin resistance.

Consultation with CDE

Kirrily Chambers is a Credentialled Diabetes Educator who works with technology in insulin resistance, prediabetes, and diabetes (type 1 and type 2). She has extensive knowledge and experience with continuous glucose monitoring and intrepreting reports.

Session One

Learn about how the Continuous Glucose Monitoring System works with your phone (must be compatible). Kirrily will insert the glucose sensor (with use of a very small applicator, which takes about five seconds). Learn how to wear and get the most from the sensor for the wear period. Learn how to remove the sensor when wear period has ended.

Session Two

This session is usually within one month of first session, time permitting. Kirrily will talk you through your results, and intrepret them with you, A hard copy is given to you and, if appropriate a copy sent to the doctors of your choice with Kirrily’s interpretations. Kirrily invites questions at any time through this proces. Any follow up is also encouraged if deemed necessary and appropriate.
