The Fourth Trimester – Postpartum Massage
The postpartum recovery period is the initial 6-week period after childbirth where the mother experiences physiological, emotional, hormonal, metabolic and structural changes within herself as she naturally begins to return to her pre-pregnancy state.
This integral postpartum period is a time for deep rest, recovery, replenishment and nourishment. It’s a time to focus on bonding, learning to breastfeed and to take care of her newborn. For some mothers they maybe learning to juggle a newborn and a toddler or older children, some may have their hands full with a beautiful set of twins!
The postpartum care and recovery period is unique from woman to woman depending on how the birth went, complications that may have occurred, interventions that may have happened, the amount of support they have at home, their personal level of health or their baby’s health… there is no story which is the same.
Postpartum massage throughout this period provides essential nurturing and emotional support for the mother during this healing period. Musculoskeletal aches and pains felt throughout the wrists, arms, shoulders, neck, back, hips and feet from postural changes, birth and feeding can be tended too in a nurturing a restorative manner. A postnatal massage can help alleviate her feelings of exhaustion caused by sleep deprivation and the newly formed caring role. Massage can help to decrease swelling, regulate hormones, support bonding and move a mother into a place of rest and digest.
The application of postnatal massage is a deeply therapeutic practice for the mother to receive as the aim is to help promote rest, recovery and replenishment for her whole being. The benefit of a postpartum massage is best received within a 60- or 90-minute session and a wonderful gift for a loved one.
