What is Pregnancy Massage?

Pregnancy massage is a nurturing and therapeutic practice, available for women during the 3 trimesters of pregnancy. The practice and application of pregnancy massage provides many health and wellbeing benefits for both the mother and baby.

Why have a Pregnancy Massage?

Ultimately, pregnancy massage enhances the intimate Mother-Baby connection offering the mother time to truly embrace her pregnancy, rest and recharge. The application of a soothing, nurturing and relaxing massage eases nervous tension and helps the mother to sleep more easily and more deeply. A massage focused on supporting the parasympathetic nervous system can reduce an elevated heart rate when caused by stress and anxiety.

Massage improves local and general blood circulation which brings more oxygen and nutrients to the cells of both mother and baby. This has the capacity to ease the load on the mother’s heart helping to keep her blood pressure in check while supporting the stimulation of glandular secretion which helps to stabilize hormonal levels. The massage will also help to eliminate waste product from the lymphatic and circulatory system which combats fatigue and helps the mother to feel more energetic and restored. Collectively this means greater vitality, less fatigue for mothers and greater nourishment for her baby.

As the mothers body continues to change rapidly throughout the 3 trimesters of pregnancy, massage treatments improve proprioception to support her ongoing body changes. Muscular discomforts commonly experienced throughout pregnancy which cause pain, discomfort and reduced range of motion can be alleviated. Common regions affected in pregnancy such as the neck, lower back and hips can be treated, along with leg cramps, oedema in the ankles and feet, carpal tunnel, headaches and general muscle tightness can be tended to. The improvement in flexibility gained from massage and increased range of movement is helpful during the last trimester and birth.

Massage can help support and relieve depression and anxiety caused by hormonal changes and at Integrative Health Solutions Women can turn to supportive counsellors and psychologist in a safe environment if they require further support.
